2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marion County finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Marion County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region six with a 2-4 region record. Marion County took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2009. The Red Raiders lost as many games as in any season since 2008. The Red Raiders hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 8-6 record in 2014. Marion County was inconsistent offensively last year and that needs to pick up if the Red Raiders want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.9 points a game. Since 2010, Marion County has gone a combined 51-25. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 1A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marion County has managed to compile a record of 156-121. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 1A and 117th in the AHSAA. Brandon Wilcox leaves Marion County after only two seasons at the school with a 10-14 record. His first team went 8-6 and lost in the semi-finals of the playoffs. Kyle Williams will lead the Marion County football program into the 2016 season. Coach Williams is a graduate of Marion County and the University of Alabama. He was the offensive coordinator at Demopolis through the 2013 football season and was away from the game the past two years. The Marion County Red Raiders will play in Class 1A region five during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Red Raiders remain in 1A but move from region six over to region five. The Red Raiders have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 54-57 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 1A and 212nd in the AHSAA. It will be an uphill battle for the Red Raiders if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Marion County will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Red Raiders open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Sulligent on Friday, August 19 at Don Jones Field at Bill Rayburn Staduim. Last year the Sulligent Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class 2A region eight. The Blue Devils lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs to Cleveland by a score of 38-13. Marion County and Sulligent have met a total of 68 times on the football field. The Red Raiders have a 22-41-5 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2011 with Marion County winning by a score of 49-22. Marion County returns 1A All-State sophomore punter Braden Pyron. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
